Some careers follow a plan. Kara Kelly ’s didn’t. She started at Asurion designing leadership programs and developing teams. Today, she heads Sales Compliance within the Legal organization, helping safeguard customer trust and strengthen how the business operates at scale.

If you had asked Kara a few years ago whether she’d ever move into compliance, she probably would have laughed.

“It wasn’t on my career bingo card,” she says.

And that’s exactly the point.

She didn’t start in risk mitigation or fraud analytics. She started somewhere very different: instructional design.

Starting with people

Kara joined Asurion in 2019 as a Senior Manager of Instructional Design, overseeing teams responsible for leadership development, onboarding, and learning experiences across the business.

She built programs that strengthened teams and helped employees grow. As her scope expanded, so did her impact. She scaled global teams and designed learning experiences used across the company.

After several years, she was ready for something different — not because she was unhappy, but because she knew she could take on more.

The pivot: growing into it

The move into Sales Compliance wasn’t part of a long-term plan. It started with a mentor who saw potential in Kara before she fully saw it herself.

“My VP at the time saw I was ready for a new challenge and trusted me to try it,” she says.

They recognized that the same skills Kara used to develop people — building trust, aligning stakeholders, and creating clarity — could translate into an entirely new domain.

The shift was significant. Instead of designing development programs, she stepped into risk, quality, analytics, and operational effectiveness. In this role, she helps ensure sales practices align with compliance standards, protecting both the business and its customers.

It would have been easier to stay where she felt most confident. Instead, she chose to grow into something new.

“Some of the best career moves come from saying yes before you feel fully ready,” she says.

Over time, her scope expanded further into Fraud, broadening her impact across the organization.

What changed was the function. What didn’t change was her ability to bring people together, solve problems, and drive results.

Why compliance matters

Compliance work happens behind the scenes. But in a hyperconnected world where customers rely on their devices every day, trust is everything.

Asurion serves millions of customers globally. That scale depends not only on innovation, but on integrity in every interaction.

Kara’s team partners across the business to identify risk, improve processes, and raise the bar on quality. Their work helps ensure the company can grow responsibly while protecting the customers it serves.

“It’s about operating with integrity,” she says. “Our work helps ensure we’re doing the right thing for the business and for our customers.”

Early in her career, Kara built programs that shaped leaders. Today, she helps shape the guardrails that protect the business — and the people who depend on it.

Growth by design

Kara’s path reflects something intentional about Asurion’s culture.

Career growth here isn’t confined to a single function. People are encouraged to look beyond titles, see potential, and invest in it.

For Kara, that support showed up in a mentor who trusted her to take on a new challenge and grow into it.

“Nothing shapes how you feel about your career more than how your manager shows up,” she says. “Having leaders who invest in you and create space for growth makes all the difference.”

Her story is proof that nonlinear paths aren’t detours. They’re development.

Why she stays

Kara stays for the people — especially the team she works alongside and the ones who trusted her with new challenges.

But she also stays because the work matters.

Behind every compliance review and risk assessment is something bigger: protecting customers, strengthening trust, and enabling the business to grow responsibly.

It may not have been on her original career plan. But today, she’s exactly where she needs to be — doing work that helps Asurion remain a trusted resource in a world that depends on its devices.

And her advice to anyone considering a stretch opportunity?

“Be brave. Raise your hand. Worst case, you learn something. Best case, you surprise yourself.”
