From Asurion Intern to Managing the Interns: Meet Kate Molloy
05-Apr-2024
Kate Molloy, Manager of Recruiting Programs and the brains and heart behind Asurion’s award-winning internship program, was recently featured on The Internship Show Podcast - a podcast for college students looking to get hired. In the episode Kate shares how Asurion’s intern program has evolved, recent intern feedback, and advice for job-seeking students.
Many don’t know this, but Kate’s Asurion journey dates back to the summer between her junior and senior year of college when she accepted a 12-week Marketing Communication internship. After a summer of impactful work, it was a “no-brainer” to accept a digital marketing role post-grad.
Six months after she started full-time, Kate volunteered to support our early careers recruiting team at a university career fair. She laughed recalling the story.
“I remember being so nervous for the fair - I had never done anything like it before! But then the four-hour event felt like minutes, and I had one of those "uh oh...I think I love this" moments.
Interested in exploring a different career path, Kate stayed engaged with the team and took on intern-related projects in her spare time. She said, “I felt like I finally found something that I was born to do.”
*Que the goosebumps.*
Spoiler alert: she did it!
Today, Kate leads Asurion's college and high school internship programs, campus partnerships, and scholarships. Talk about full circle, right?
Keep reading to learn more about Kate, our award-winning internship program, and to hear some fun stories from years past:
Kate, what’s your favorite part about your job as Manager of Recruiting Programs?
I get to be a small piece of someone's career journey, and I think that is incredible. I believe that every student I've worked with over the years was meant to be in my life in some capacity. Our interns challenge me to do things that make me uncomfortable (10-year-old me who was too scared to order a pizza over the phone would be shocked to see me now). They help me embrace change and keep me humble - they make me laugh and smile and believe in myself. I wouldn't be half the person I am without them or our program. I believe in our program and that our past and future Asurion-terns will change the world.
What’s your favorite memory from your time managing the internship program?
I'm young in my career and have always been the youngest on my team - as much as I love what I do, I've always struggled with intense imposter syndrome because of my age. There was a moment a couple of summers ago that I'll never forget: I had just finished emceeing an intern alum panel for our new class of summer interns. When I opened the floor for comments and questions an intern told the room that the reason, they were at Asurion was because of me. Others in the room echoed that statement, and before I knew it, the room was clapping, and I was furiously blinking back tears. I'm a total words of affirmation person and it was one of the most rewarding moments of my life.
What advice would you give a college student looking for an internship or a full-time role?
When I’m asked this question, I almost always give the same answer: give yourself grace. Fail. Be messy and complicated but show up anyway.
I made a mistake at work a long time ago (it's funny that I don't remember what it was now because it felt so big at the time). My boss looked at me and said "You know it's ok to make mistakes, right? What matters now is how you react. We fail forward together."
When looking for my first internship I was rejected a lot. My Asurion badge photo today is the same photo I took at 21 years old on day one of my internship. It was a day that I didn't think would come because I had received so many "nos’". I look at my picture every day and remember that I wouldn't be here today if I succeeded at everything I tried.
If you're looking for a job or internship right now, I hope that you keep moving forward through all of the hard stuff because I can tell you from experience: it's worth it.
What makes interning at Asurion different than interning anywhere else?
We pack our intern calendar full within our 12-week program. The support interns receive throughout the summer is a big draw to our program - we identify a custom roster of mentors that can help 1x1 coach & be their cheerleaders. At the end of the day, the goal of our programs is to integrate students fully into a team. Our interns directly support Asurion products and services from day one - we’ve seen Software Engineer interns put code into production in as little as a week. Our data scientists might be collaborating on a Gen AI project while our finance interns could be managing budgets for clients. The sky is the limit for our interns.
How can students stay “in the know” about our internship programs & offerings?
We post our jobs for the next summer in August of every year and recruiting ramps up within the first two weeks of September. You can stay up to date with current job listings on careers.asurion.com or follow us on LinkedIn @Asurion and Instagram, Facebook and X @LifeAtAsurion.
We hope you enjoyed meeting Kate and learning more about our stellar internship program. Stay tuned for more exciting news as we kick off our 2024 Intern Cohort in May!
